Travel to the end of Germany’s famous ‘Romantic Road’ and visit the fairy tale castle of Neuschwanstein, named for the Swan Knight, Lohengrin, of the Wagner opera and the later inspiration for the Disney logo.
The castle sits on a hilltop above the village and is accessible by a steep, narrow road either by horse and carriage or on foot.
This castle and its amazing interior, contains 360 rooms many with decorated with ornate furniture, paintings and tapestries, some of which depict scenes from the operas of Richard Wagner.
No host lunch at one of the restaurants en route back downhill or weather permitting take a break at one of our top choice beer gardens overlooking the lake.
On the return trip to Munich, stop at Oberammergau, home of the ’Passion Play’ which is performed every 10 years. The town is also known for its outstanding wood carvers.
We will include a stop where you can witness one of the many village artisans carving religious scenes and figures out of their wooden blocks.
Continue to Steingaden and see the Wieskirche (Pilgrimage Church of Wies) an oval rococo church, designed in the late 1740s and added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983.
